AWTTC Best Practice Day - Spring 2021

Having been unable to host a Best Practice Day in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AWTTC hosted its first virtual Best Practice Day on 13th April 2021. This was an online event focused on sharing some of the excellent medicines optimisation work ongoing in Wales, and provided the opportunity for attendees to ask any questions they may have.

Penicillin allergy de-labelling

Dr Laurence Gray, a Consultant in Acute Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB), gave the first presentation on behalf of the penicillin allergy de-labelling (PADL) group. The talk covered how a drug allergy is often identified, how penicillin allergy can be investigated, and how the vast majority of patients’ penicillin allergies are unsubstantiated.

Dr Gray also provided an overview of the development of a local protocol in Cardiff and Vale UHB for penicillin allergy de-labelling which is being piloted.

Medicines management in care homes: A focus on National Prescribing Indicators (NPIs)

Alex Bamsey and Matthew Lawson, Integrated Clinical Pharmacists in Swansea Bay UHB, presented on behalf of the medicines management team for care homes. Their presentation described how the team have been working to bring pharmacy services closer to care home residents and how improvements to medication reviews of residents have been able to drive improvements in line with the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) NPIs.
